Steamed Yam Cake/Orh Kuih

This was my all time favourate for breakfast and teatime. I never fail to get one from the Pasar malam or morning market whenever I sees one. But the sad thing is, even in Malaysia, a good Yam cake is still hard to come by.

This version I made didn't call for dark soy sauce, it is whitish in color. The one we normally had back home is brown in color, their taste are similar, with or without dark soy sauce.

Pumpkin Rice 南瓜饭

My mum used to make this Pumpkin rice back home, there are similar dishes made with yam, Chinese mustard (Gai Choy) and long bean.

It is prepared almost like Spanish Paella, the rice is cooked together with ingredients and seasoning in a pot/wok, and later simmer to perfection.

Its simply irresistible as the tastes of yam, meat and other ingredients were all well blend into rice, every spoon of it is a charm! All you need is another bowl of soup, and that is! A great dinner already!

Plain Paratha (Pan-Fried Indian Flatbread) - Type 1

Couple of years back a lady posted a "Chapati" post on the website I frequent, it was all good but the bread she posted was really a Paratha rather than Chapati, I tried to explained her the difference. To my surprised, she took it very defensively and told me that she can't be wrong mainly because her neighbor, who is originally from Hyderabad was her teacher in this matter. Who am I to argue with an Indian origin, right?

After that episode I have been meaning to write about paratha and chapati, my plan is to write about three different ways to make plain paratha. And here is the first one.

Thai Grilled Chicken (Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง)

Remember the Thai Sweet Chili Sauce I made back in March? I used it for everything I could think of but what it is truly meant to be. In Thailand, this sauce is to be consumed with grill chicken (Gai Yang ไก่ย่าง) and only the grill chicken.

They taste best together, the sweet and sourness in the sauce balance the spiciness and pungent taste of cilantro in the chicken, it is simply irresistible!

Baked Cassava Cake (Bingka Ubi)

Cassava is the equivalent of potato at where I came from, it could be used in many different dishes,  this sweet tasty cake is one of them. There are many ways to prepare this delicious cake, it is normally prepared as a steam dish as oven is not a very common cookware in SEA, it could also be wrapped in fresh Banana leaves and steam it.

I personally like to prepare mine in the oven as it gives a beautiful crunchy looks to it.
