【紫薯发糕】Purple Sweet Potato Steamed Cake



前阵子在超市买了几只紫薯打算烤了吃,剩下的两小只我拿来做了这款紫薯发糕当早餐,成品颜色非常让人惊艳,味道也非常好吃。真是一款赏心悦目的糕点。

I bought a few Purple sweet potatoes as snacks and made this steamed cake with two of them, the color of this cake is so enchanting that it is almost sad to eat them! LOL

Kuih Kasturi 【绿豆炸糕】& 【绿豆卷】



我上中学时的食堂是个马来食堂,不怎么卖中式的食物。但是食堂阿姨做的马来糕点非常好吃,这个绿豆炸糕是我最喜欢的高点之一,脆脆的外皮加上糯糯的带有椰香味的内陷非常非常好吃。

出国这些年我也做过好几次这款炸糕,也拍过照片想写食谱,但之前的照片拍得不好,我也一直没再做。这一周工作不忙,就做一次绿豆炸糕和朋友分享,邻居和儿子保姆都说很好吃呢!

The canteen in my high school sells only Halal/Malay foods as it is a Malay school, I loved some of the Kuih (pastry/snack) they sell in the canteen. This Kuih kasturi is one of them.

I have made this kuih a couple of times in the past few years, but didn't have a chance to photograph them. Since my work is a little relax this week, I made a batch of this kuih to enjoy and take a few snaps...

Chinese Cabbage Rolls【肉末白菜卷】



今年春节做了好些菜,却一直没时间整理食谱和照片。趁这几天比较不忙,把食谱和照片都整理出来。

冬季正是吃大白菜的季节,今天就写个肉末白菜卷的食谱吧!

I made this Chinese Napa Cabbage Rolls for Chinese New Year and has no time to work on the photos and the recipe. 

Since it is winter time and the vegetable that is in season is Napa Cabbage,  it is time to make this yummy healthy cabbage roll!

鱼头咖喱是马来西亚和新加坡人很喜爱的一款美食,也是很多餐厅里热销的一款下饭菜。烹饪时用的各种辛香料为这款咖喱增添了非常特殊的风味,也让食客们可以品尝到丰富多彩的味道。

Fish head curry is a very popular dish in Malaysia and Singapore. A dish I often order whenever we eat out in the restaurant, the use of a combination of various spices and herbs create a very rich and palatable experience.

Onion Pakora 【印式炸洋葱】



印式炸洋葱是我们家最喜欢的小吃之一,做法很简单,也非常美味。

冷天时煮上一小锅香料奶茶,吃几块酥炸洋葱(丸),真的很惬意满足~~

Onion Pakora/Pakoda is one of our favorite snacks in cold winter days, it is easy to make and very delicious to go with a cup of hot Masala Chai. 

A sure effective way to warm the body and to satisfy the stomach!

Five Spice Peanuts【微波炉版五香花生米】



这款花生是几年前到一位姐姐家做客时吃到的,非常美味。当时就和姐姐要来了做法,后来也在微信群里分享过,好多朋友都喜欢。

这个花生我们家经常做,却每次都忘了拍照记录。今天又做了一批,趁光线还不错,拍几张成品照,写个食谱。食谱是我后来量化记录的,做法简单,每次都成功好吃。

I had this peanut the first time at a friend's place and loved it very much, my friend was kind enough to share her recipe with me, and the recipe has been made multiple times at home.

I had since finalized a version of a recipe that I liked and easy to replicate. The result is always good and very consistent.

Loofah in Pumpkin Sauce 【南瓜烩丝瓜】



秋季是南瓜和丝瓜的丰收季节,也正是南瓜和丝瓜最营养好吃的时候。不久前和朋友约饭时点的菜里有一道南瓜烩丝瓜,非常清甜美味。我就一直想着在家试做一次。

昨天妈妈的好友Lisa阿姨送来几根她种的丝瓜,非常肥嫩,刚好家里也收成了我自己种的南瓜,就都拿来做了这个南瓜烩丝瓜,真的非常营养又美味呢!

Fall is harvest time for pumpkin and loofah, it is also the most nutritious time for these two vegetables. I had this Loofah in Pumpkin Sauce during one of the gatherings with friends not long ago and really liked it.

My aunt Lisa sent me a few loofahs from her garden, with the pumpkin I harvest from my front yard, I made this Loofah pumpkin dish at home and it turned out really really nice!

Thai Pumpkin Dessert 【泰式南瓜甜汤】



家里的南瓜结果了,非常地香甜美味。摘一只做我最喜欢的这款泰式南瓜甜汤,也分了点给邻居,他们都好喜欢。

注:如果南瓜是自己种的有机南瓜,可以用丝瓜布把南瓜皮刷洗干净后连皮一起切块煮,南瓜皮更营养哦!

I harvested the pumpkin at my front yard, it is very sweet and tasty, thus a good candidate for this Thai pumpkin dessert. I sent some to my neighbors and they loved it too!
Note: I cooked with the skin on as my pumpkin is homegrown, if you buy yours from the shop, you can remove the pumpkin skin.

Steamed Pork Belly with Yam 【芋头扣肉】



今年春节期间我做了好些菜过节,但是因为后来工作开始忙碌,也就没时间一一地把食谱整理出来。趁这些天有点时间,把食谱都写好,以后也可以再做。

芋头扣肉是我家乡非常受欢迎的一道年菜,寓意“年年有余”,也非常好吃。

I made a few dishes that I really liked during the Chinese new year period this year, but had little time to work on the recipe and pictures. Since this month is a little more relax work wise, I finally find time to write the recipe.

Steamed pork belly with yam is a very traditional and loved dish for Chinese New Year, this version turned out good and it actually tasted better the day after!

Deep Fried Pumpkin Blossoms【酥炸南瓜花】



We went back to Malaysia for 2 months for the summer holiday thus I was not able to plant much in my backyard this summer. 

But the compost at my front yard that consists of my homegrown pumpkin peels and seeds last fall has turned into a big plant when I return from Asia. Since it has blossoms galore, I am so happy that I can still enjoy some harvest this year even though I had not planted anything this!

今年暑假我带俊宝回了娘家一趟,所以今年后院就处于休耕状态了。前院有冬天埋下的南瓜种子发的苗,在我回乡的两个月里长成一大丛的南瓜藤,放完假回来就已经开花结果了。

周末有空收拾了下院子,顺便摘几朵南瓜花炸了吃,家里人都很喜欢哦!

Vegetarian Egg Dumplings 【素食蛋饺】



I made this dumpling dish for my son's Chinese school New Year celebration, the parents and teachers loved it and was praising the taste and appearance of it a lot! Worth the effort of spending the whole morning making the dumplings !

Note: I have scaled the recipe down to 3-4 servings which is more suitable for a family, the pictures taken was for a much larger servings.

这个素食蛋饺是今年春节期间做了带去慈济中文学校庆春节的。单是蛋饺就弄了一个上午,幸好结果非常受大家欢迎,说吃不够呢!

注:因为带去聚餐做的量比较大,食谱我写了比较合用于一般家庭的量,方便大家一起试做,所以材料和照片里显示的材料量会不一样。

Adzuki Bean Glutinous Rice Dumplings 【红豆肉粽】




It was dragon boat festival again last week , I was not having any plan to make any dumplings initially until the day of dragon boat festival, since I was not working that day, I decided to make this version of Bak Zhang adding Adzuki beans to the rice.

It came out so delicious and I couldn't stopped at just one!

今年的端午节本来我没打算要裹粽子的,后来端午那天刚好不上班,就做了几只红豆肉粽吃,权当过节了。

谁知这款红豆肉粽真的很让人惊喜,糯米里有着红豆的香气,非常的好吃。明年绝对还要做这款!

Chinese Toon Omelette 【香椿煎蛋】



A friend of mine called to inform me that her Chinese toon has sprouted  and told me to go harvest some for cooking. I collected about a basket-full of the Chinese toon young leaves and made some Chinese toon sauce. 

I also kept aside a bunch to make this Omelette, it is a delicacy that comes with spring!


前两周有个姐姐给我发短信说家里的香椿发芽了,让我过去取。新鲜的香椿我全给烫好,做了一大罐的香椿酱,可以拌面炒饭,非常好。

剩下的一小部分做了这个香椿煎蛋,非常好吃,真是一到春天必吃的美味呢!

Fried lotus roots box 【炸藕盒】



This Fried lotus roots box was made during the Chinese New Year period, but I didn't have to to write the recipe until now.

The lotus are sliced and stuffed with minced meat then coat with a layer of batter and deep fried, a little high in calorie but it is so tasty.

I think one can indulge a little during the CNY celebration, right?

这款藕盒是今年春节期间做的一道年菜,之后一直瞎忙也提不起劲来写食谱。今天周末有点时间,就把食谱整理一下放到博客里。

炸藕盒非常好吃,香酥的外皮里面裹着脆脆的莲藕,一口咬下去还有浓浓的肉香味。是一道口感味道都很有层次的菜哦!

Shepherd's Purse Wonton 【荠菜馄饨】



Spring is my favorite season for a reason, as soon the the spring date passed and the weather warms up, many of the edible wild plants will appear one after another. 

Shepherd's purse is one of the earliest wild greens to appear in the spring, I always try to spot them before the flower stalks appear, the leaves are much more tender and sweet at this stage.

My favorite way to prepare this greens is to make it into wonton, one thing I look forward to eat every year around this time of the year.

一年四季里我最喜欢春天了,立春之后天气几乎就是一天天的暖和起来。我家附近的郊野就变得很热闹有趣,有好多的野菜可以挖。

初春我最期待的就是挖荠菜了,刚出土的荠菜非常嫩,挖一袋拿回家做馄饨吃,非常地美味!

Chinese New Year Lucky Bag 【福袋】



This lucky bag was made on the first day of Chinese New Year but I didn't had time to post the recipe.

Steamed Fish With Ginger 【姜蓉蒸鱼】


Whole fish needs to be served in Chinese New Year reunion dinner as the Chinese word for fish "鱼“  has the same pronunciation and intonation is the same as 余 (yu) which carries the meaning of plenty or abundance in Chinese.

Thus serving whole fish is the Chinese way of wishing for prosperity and wealth abundant in the year to come!

我家乡那里吃团年饭时,都必须上一条全鱼,以表达年年有鱼(余)的期望。

虽然出国后我很少蒸全鱼,今年就蒸一条我在马来西亚时经常吃的姜茸蒸鱼,也希望往后我们家可以年年有余。

Pumpkin Steamed Cake 【红枣南瓜发糕】



A few pumpkin plants came from our compost last spring and grew into a very healthy plant that gave us handful of pumpkins. Though the yield is not large but the fruits are very sweet and tasty.

I made a  couple of dishes with my homegrown pumpkin and this Steamed Cake is one of that.

去年春天的时候我家前院的土里自己钻出几棵南瓜苗,间苗时我只留了一棵,后来长成好大一丛南瓜藤。可能前院的土壤不算特别肥沃,所以后来一共才结了5只南瓜。自己种的南瓜绿色无污染,味道特别甜美好吃。

今天取小半只做南瓜发糕,特别香甜美味。

Sautéed whole Shrimps【油爆虾】



This Shanghainese Sauteed Whole shrimps is one of the dishes that I first learnt online,  I still remember the first time I made it for my family was during Chinese New Year years back.

In conjunction with Chinese New Year this year, I decided to write a post about this dish. It has been years though.


油爆虾是多年前在国外学习时在网上学的一道美食,当时的美食论坛基本只有文字食谱,还没有照片呢!

这道美食后来我毕业回马来西亚之后还在过年的时候给家人做过一次,这几天比较有空,就打算写几个年菜食谱,这道虾因此就上了我们家的餐桌啦~~

Hainanese Chicken Rice 【海南鸡饭】


It has been a long time since I have made this famous Malaysian dish Hainanese Chicken Rice. My friend brought me one free-range chicken from Chinatown in NYC few days ago, I decided to make Hainanese Chicken rice with it and share with her!

好久不做海南鸡饭了,前几天好友从纽约买了一只三黄鸡给我,新鲜的三黄鸡不做海南鸡饭就太浪费了,刚好也发现没完整地写过一个海南鸡饭的食谱,就趁这个机会也整理一下食谱吧!
